"marvthegrate" (marvthegrate)

So I did a thing today. This is my Gulf Racing inspired 60% keyboard.
PCB is KBDFans DZ60
Switches are Halo Clears
Case is KBDFans 5 Degree
Caps are WASD OEM profile.
I have a custom USBC cable on order but it will be several weeks before I get it.
Any other Keeb fans here ?

Very cool. On my list after the new build is to get a mechanical keyboard. I’ve been leaning towards something like a DAS prime 13, but I’m open to suggestions. I’ll be looking for something low-key in the looks department, mechanical, and I’d like to try out something backlit.

good lord, I didn’t know there was a burgeoning market for keyboard components to build your own from the bare PCB up. The community has certainly advanced since I bought Das Keyboard II back in 2007.
I do love my p
olyoxymethylene key caps though

I hate Cherry switches after I found Kailh. Same form factor but just better in every other aspect (imo). I was looking at a hot swap RGB pcb but the layout is not what I wanted. I can make as many macros as I want, as this is a QMK compatible board. Just add a layer and make whatever macro I want.

I mean, it really depends on how deep your wallet is. I have custom boards that cost me under $100 and some way over $500. The more features you want the more they cost. I am like pure custom at this point. But look at the ALT keyboard from massdrop. I have one on the way. It’s not as “custom” as I would like but it’s a goodb oard.

You. Have. No. Idea. I have friends with boards that they have sunk over a grand into. I have one I am into over $500. The rabbit hole is deep, my friend.

Given the amount of time we spend using them, a grand spent building a badass hotrod keyboard doesn’t seem all that ridiculous.
And people scoffed at me when I paid $80 for mine. 12 years and
millions of keystrokes later, still works like new.

No reason to go cheap on your monitors/keyboard/mouse. Those are how you interact with the machine, and they can last much longer than any given system. I think it’s a much harder jump to say “is this keyboard worth $500" vs. “can a keyboard be worth $500".

Yeah, but there is a point where you are just throwing money for the purpose of throwing money (i am looking at you, Artisan keycap market)

Type on what you like. That is the important thing. I make a living driving a keyboard. I want to enjoy the experience.

Yup, it’s a 60%. I can program a layer with a numpad, but what I would actually do is make a separate numpad outside of this. I really like the small form factor boards (my daily driver at work is an Ortholinear Preonic) and will sacrifice the numpad for the size of the finished board.

Of course, even my 13 year old Logitech works like new. It is pretty filthy though, I need up my keyboard cleaning game. And in fairness, it was $104 for a keyboard mouse combo (the mouse doesn’t hold a charge long enough to be useful, so I’ve moved on from that), so it’s not like it was a low end product to begin with.

I’m just gonna not buy any more boards or food or clothes until I can afford an M65-A with some nice SA caps.

I love me some Rama. I have two of their macro pads. I also wish I didn’t have a board that cost more than the M65a.

I suggest starting with the GMMK keyboards. They’re pretty cheap, around $50 for the board, and hot swap, so you can try a few different switches and caps to find your favorite.

I would not suggest the ALT to start. I have the software they use. It’s awful, but admittedly getting better.
I prefer the Input Club configurator. The Gemini Dawn or Dusk would be a better pick for a beginner. But I think the GMMK is better to start.
